ABOUT THE SECOND SESSION - Old Covenant and New Covenant Mothers: Sarah and the Virgin Mary

In the second session Christine R. will first unfold the biblical concept of "covenant', and then she will explore the biblical narratives related to Sarah, Abraham’s wife and the matriarch of the Jewish people, a strong and independent character. Afterward, Christine R. will point out both similarities and differences between Abraham's wife and Isaac's mother, Sarah, and Mary of Nazareth.

ABOUT THE SERIES "SOME WOMEN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT: THEIR STORIES AND OURS"

For many Christians, the Old Testament is familiar mostly through childhood Bible stories - Noah's ark, Samson and Delilah, David and Goliath, Daniel in the lion's den. For some, much of the Old Testament is obscure and seems to be "long ago and far away", veiled in the mists of time. Perhaps they - or you yourself - question how important it is for Christians nowadays to know very much about these ancient writings.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The unity of the two Testaments proceeds from the unity of God's plan and his Revelation. The Old Testament prepared for the New and the New Testament fulfills the Old; the two shed light on each other; both are the true Word of God." (CCC #140) History, in a Biblical sense, is "His Story" - the Story God is telling throughout the whole Bible.

We will be studying some Old Testament women - mostly ordinary women with ordinary day to day lives - who play important roles in the Love Story that God is revealing to us in Scripture. We will seek to answer some questions as we look at their lives:

Why study these women? Why do they matter, really? What can we possibly learn from them? And what do their stories have to do with our own stories?
