ABOUT THE SECOND SESSION - THE WORD BECAME FLESH: JESUS' 'SILENT YEARS'

Nazareth - Bethlehem - Herodium - Mt Carmel.

The second session will begin in Galilee, in Nazareth, located inside a bowl atop the Nazareth ridge, north of the Valley of Jezreel. There, we will stop at the Church of the Annunciation, built over the place where it is believed that the angel Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus to the virgin Mary. From the Church of the Annunciation we will virtually walk to Mary’s well and from there to the “Tomb of the Just,” an ancient burial place that some scholars relate to Saint Joseph.

From Nazareth, we will travel to Bethlehem, located about a hundred-mile walk from Nazareth, a hill town in the Judean mountains, and the setting of the end of the famous biblical story of Ruth, the devoted daughter-in-law of Naomi. We will visit the Church of the Nativity, the oldest standing church in the Holy Land, and originally built by Constantine’s mother in the 4th century.

Afterward, we will move to the area located to the east of the city and traditionally believed to be the place of the fields of the shepherds “keeping watch o’er their flocks by night.”

Following this visit, we will travel 3 miles southeast of Bethlehem to the Herodium, one of Herod’s fortresses, built on the location of his victory over Antigonus in 40 BC. and whose summit is about 2,460 feet above sea level.

Time permitting, we will travel to Haifa, and we will have a chance to explore Mt. Carmel, which is the setting of the story about Elijah’s victory over the prophets of Baal, and which is mentioned in the Bible most often as a symbol of beauty and fertility.
